Video: Pt. 4 - Writing UPDATE Statements That Reference Multiple Tables (FROM Clause)

  • ·Skill level: 400 (Intermediate - Advanced)
  • ·Run Time: 12:00
  • ·Instructor: Scott Whigham

Description:

This video is part 4 of a 4 part section of videos on the Data Manipulation Language (DML) UPDATE STATEMENT. This video takes the UPDATE STATEMENT to the next level. Just when you thought you could not learn anything else about the UPDATE STATEMENT, Scott Whigham has even more to share with you.The following video includes information and training on the following:
  • T-SQL Proprietary Code
  • FROM Clause and the UPDATE Statement
  • Origin of the FROM Clause
  • Explanations to Why you should and Why you should NOT utilize the FROM clause
  • Real world examples of how and why to utilize the FROM clause
  • Common Errors in real world uses of SELECT and FROM statements and how to rectify those errors
  • Introduction to JOINS and UPDATES
  • PROPER JOIN Syntax
  • Explanations to why you should NOT utilize a JOIN and UPDATE statement where you can use a
  • subquery instead.
  • Examples show on what is ANSI compliant syntax and what is T-SQL proprietary syntax
  • Proper UPDATE Statement and SET Command syntax
  • Real World examples of proper syntax and bad syntax when writing UPDATES and JOINS
Scott does a wonderful job of showing us how to utilize the UPDATE statement with a JOIN syntax. This video however does require an extensive amount of knowledge towards JOIN statements to followthis. This is a very good video for the more advanced SQL Server programmer wanting to increasetheir knowledge about the UPDATE Statement.
